Getting Dental Implants? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Are you thinking about getting dental implants? Whether you’re still considering your options or you already have an appointment to get started, you may want to know what to expect.
When it comes to replacing missing teeth, dental implants are considered to be the gold standard. They don’t happen overnight, but the process is worth it for a restoration that can last a lifetime. Learn more in this patient’s guide to the dental implant procedure.
What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a titanium post that replaces the natural root of a tooth. It is surgically placed in the socket directly into the jaw bone. Over time it fuses with the bone to form a solid bond that acts as an anchor for a dental prosthetic. To replace a single tooth, one implant can support a dental crown. To replace multiple teeth in a row, two dental implants can support a bridge. And in cases where all of the teeth need to be replaced, 4-6 implants can support a full arch denture.
Benefits of Dental Implants
- Restores dental function. Dental implants allow you to chew normally, just as you would with your natural teeth. You can eat the foods you enjoy without limitations of missing teeth or lesser quality prosthetics.
- Looks natural. Dental implants are anchored in the jaw the same way your natural teeth are, giving you a natural appearance.
- Maintains jaw structure. With a dental implant filling the empty socket, the process of resorption of the bone will be prevented, maintaining bone density and jaw structure.
- Won’t damage other teeth. Unlike a bridge or partial dentures that use the healthy teeth for support, dental implants have no effect on the existing teeth, allowing you to avoid unnecessary damage.
- Can last a lifetime. With good care and maintenance, dental implants can last for 30 years or the rest of your life.
The Dental Implant Process
- Consultation. The first step in the process is a consultation to discuss dental implants with your oral surgeon. This will also include an evaluation to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants.
- Preparation. If you are not immediately eligible for dental implants, some preparatory procedures may be needed, such as bone grafting to prepare the jaw to receive implants.
- Placement of the implant. When the jaw is ready your dental implant can be placed. Anesthesia is used to make sure you are comfortable during the procedure. You may have a few stitches that will dissolve automatically as the gum tissue heals.
- Adding the abutment. A few months after the placement of the implant, once fusion with the bone has occurred, the abutment can be added. This is the post that will be used to connect the crown.
- Attaching the prosthetic. A few weeks after the abutment has been added, the prosthetic can be placed.
Teeth in a Day
For patients who are eligible, there is another option for replacing all of your teeth in the upper and/or lower arch. All-on-X restorations allow you to get new teeth in a single appointment. This typically involves the placement of 4 dental implants that hold the prosthetic securely in place.
